Photo + Caption Competition 2019: Winner –

Allison Scofield. “Occupational Therapy to me is about creating an opportunity for a person to be themselves. What’s meaningful to one person is not meaningful to another. This little garden gate in the middle of this overgrown garden looks like nothing to someone else, but for the person who built it, it signalled a point in his rehabilitation that he could do what he always does… build. I feel so privileged as an OT to be able to see someone attempt and achieve something that is “real life”. It’s not stacking cones or using a pin board, it’s swinging a hammer and feeling great when it lines up the head of the nail (well for me it is). Meaningful activity is a word we throw around and sounds a bit ‘old school ‘, but really it’s just doing stuff that makes us feel like ourselves again, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. OT’s are amazing in that our job enables people to do just that. That’s why this little garden gate is so amazing.”
