Treaty relationship governance model


In September 2015 the OTNZ-WNA membership voted in a treaty relationship model with council having both tangata tiriti and tangata whenua houses. Two presidents will chair council meetings and are engaged in regular updates with the association’s executive director.

 Under the treaty relationship governance model:

  • Number on council 7
  • A minimum of 3 Māori councilors nominated by their roopu
  • All nominations are put forward for whole of membership voting at AGM
  • The WFOT delegate is the seventh council position voted for by the whole of membership irrespective of being either tangata whenua or tangata tiriti
  • Two presidents preside – one from each house.
  • Presidents will co-chair council meetings
  • Council subcommittees are represented by an equal number of tangata tiriti and tangata whenua members (an addition to the rules)
  • Equity of responsibilities spread or jointly undertaken apply as deemed practicable, including costs associated with two presidents

Tangata Whenua: A generic term for Māori comprising those with mana whenua responsibilities – Māori who are tied culturally to an area by whakapapa and whose ancestors lived and died there; together with taura here – Māori who are resident in an area but who belong to waka and tribes from other parts of Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Tangata Tiriti: A generic term to describe people whose rights to live in Aotearoa/New Zealand derive from Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the arrangements that the Crown has established under a common rule of law and the equity provisions of Article 3 of Te Tiriti.

Background

Occupational Therapy New Zealand Whakaora Ngangahau Aotearoa has been on a journey towards a representative bicultural organisation since 1997. At this time the association established a bicultural sub-committee with Māori and non Māori members called Te Roopu Whakapiri. Members were committed to bringing a greater understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi and it was envisaged as a stepping-stone towards assisting the occupational therapy profession and the association towards being bicultural.

In 1999, the key stakeholders of the first occupational therapy hui, held at Tapu te Ranga Marae, Wellington were the then council, alongside the Occupational Therapy Board of New Zealand;  heads of the occupational therapy schools; Māori consumers; and Māori and other occupational therapy practitioners. By 2002 this sub-committee had dissolved, but around the same time members voted for a designated Māori portfolio position as part of the council. This was filled in 2004.

Over the past decade a number of initiatives have evolved. In 2009, OTNZ-WNA–WNA partnered with Te Rau Matatini for the launch of Te Umanga Whakaora (accelerated Māori occupational therapy workforce development strategy). Further initiatives included the Te Umanga Whakaora column in OT Insight, and an annual bicultural edition which is now one of our most popular publications during the calendar year; appointing a Māori perspective position to conference programme planning and encouraging the clinical workshop and conference programme to have provision for cultural competence presentations/workshops.   Other initiatives such as promotion of research opportunities for Māori, and promoting occupational therapy as a career for Māori have occurred. Kaumatua were appointed as advisors to support and guide the association on issues of tikanga. By 2012 the value of biculturalism was confirmed alongside occupational justice, integrity, transparency, collaboration and professionalism for the organisation.



66th Annual General Meeting


The 66th AGM of Occupational Therapy New Zealand Whakaora Ngangahau Aotearoa (Inc). will be held in conjunction with the 6th Asia Pacific Occupational Therapy Congress, 2015.  All welcome.  When: 4.30pm – 6.00pm, Tuesday 15 September 2015. Horizon Scanning


Increasing our political awareness and advocacy is key to our positioning the profession to meet the needs of the future health and social well-being strategy being planned by the Ministry of Health.

Scanning the political horizon to uncover issues relating to our practitioners is therefore paramount.

APOTC 2015 early bird extended

Survey on ACC Housing Modifications Service


ACC is asking occupational therapists in housing needs assessment field for their opinions about ACC’s home modifications service, so it can be made better.

All responses are anonymous and it should take about 15 minutes to complete. The survey closes on 22 June 2015.

The results of this survey will be shared in the OT Insight. Your feedback will be considered along with feedback from clients & their families/whanau, suppliers, and ACC staff. All responses will feed into a review of what’s working well and what needs improving, ahead of an open market tender at the end of the year.



Educators!


Make a real difference.

The Education for Diversity Symposium is an opportunity for academics/educators, students and clinicians who intend to become educators to meet and network with like-minded people from across the Asia Pacific region. The symposium will be a source of inspiration, and provide an occasion for the development of new connections and innovative partnerships.

It is hosted by AUT University and Otago Polytechnic and is held the day after the APOTC, on 18 September 2015, at the Rotorua Energy Events Center.

The programme delivers an exciting programme of contemporary issues in education: inter-professional education; technology; cultural diversity and occupational justice. It aims to provide you with new ideas that will renew your energy about promoting educational reform. Come and be part of a dialogue that will enable you to make a real difference to your students.
Education Symposium topics include:

  1. Interprofessional education and collaborative practice: how can occupational therapy educators prepare graduates to work with diverse professions.
  2. Promoting occupational justice, inclusion, and participation: embedding learning about human rights within occupational therapy education.
  3. Educating for cultural diversity.
  4. Technology for diverse modes of learning: using educational technology for distance, learning styles and sustainability.

Only $57.50 per person (includes lunch).

Early bird extended


The change to the new website has meant that the membership renewal process has not been easy this year. Our wholehearted apologies go out to members.So that you don’t miss out on the early bird period it has been extended to May 14.

If you paid your membership prior to the new website launch you will have difficulty viewing your receipt online. We are aware of the issue and will be sending these out to all members in the coming week. Please let us know if you need your receipt for urgent reimbursement.

Karis Boyd grants awarded


This grant was set up in memory of Karis Boyd, an occupational therapist who lived, breathed and personified the qualities and virtues which the occupational therapy profession stands for. These annual grants are open to undergraduate third year students who are members of the association.  The grant/s will be up to the value of $500.00.



Membership early bird closes 30 April


Invoices were emailed to all existing members on 1 March 2015 for the financial year beginning 1 April.   Early bird concession ends 30 April 2015, so renew now to ensure you make the most of this reduction.  Please contact the office if you are a new member or if you didn’t receive an invoice.



Maria Scott-Multani wins award


If you walk in another person’s shoes you can understand their journey. That is the person-centred philosophy behind the “Walking in Another’s Shoes” programme for which Maria Scott-Multani received the 2014 Occupational Therapy New Zealand Whakaora Ngangahau Aotearoa achievement award.

The initiative aims to provide education and support for paid carers working with people living with dementia. It is a small group experiential training program that began in the Canterbury District Health Board in 2008. There is now a Walking in Another’s Shoes Educator in every District Health Board in the South Island and other North Island District Health Boards are also adopting the programme.

The judges commented that they were “very impressed with the way occupational therapy and occupational practice has been, and continues to be, recognised within this programme. Those people completing the training programme clearly value their training and this provides a vehicle for occupation and occupational therapy to be recognised and to benefit the health and wellbeing of people living with dementia.



Occupational therapy loses founding member


Rene Stacy Skilton (nee Barton), known as Hazel Skilton, read about occupational therapy in the Reader’s Digest. Liking what she heard, and wanting to make a difference in people’s lives, she planned to go to America to train but was thwarted by the war. She was one of four of the first occupational therapists to be trained in New Zealand in 1940. She worked in the Queen Mary Hospital in Hanmer Springs where several of the men had been repatriated from the WW2 battle on Crete, then transferred to Rotorua where she worked with return servicemen. The experience of nursing one young airman remained with her, “there were times when his whole personality crumbled and he had to be carefully nursed until he recovered.” see OT Insight Vol 36 No.1 for more
