One week out – Get to know our Wednesday presenters!

Join Lucy Charles and Arul Hamil (Paediatric Occupational Therapists, PaediatricOT) on Wednesday October 28th at 10am – 11am for an interactive session via Zoom, at the OTNZ-WNA e-Clinical workshops 2020.
Lucy and Arul are both Occupational Therapists with over 25 years-experience working with infants and children in a number of different health, educational and private settings. They run a private practice in Auckland Paediatric OT with a small team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. They also do work in the Pacific Islands and run multidisciplinary assessments nationally. They support families that come from the Pacific for medical services at Starship and Kidz First. Arul and Lucy are passionate about hearing the child and families voice, journeying alongside families and focussing on occupation centred outcomes that build on individual’s strengths and enable participation in their lived environment. A key component is meeting and matching families where they are at and respecting their values, culture and life capacity at any given time. They work with many families from all walks of life with a range of developmental needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder Neurological conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Chromosomal anomalies and much more.
They have been integrating the Hauora into their practice which is a Māori view of health unique to New Zealand, and covers the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs that everyone has. Māori believe that each of these 4 concepts supports the others. This aligns with the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the F words developed by the team at Can Child. Lucy and Arul developed the F-Words Life Wheel in collaboration with Kelly Reynolds Physiotherapist from Kidsplus Australia and CanChild Canada over the past 2 years and have been putting this into practice with ongoing reflections and updates which is now completed. The F words is a biopsychosocial approach which brings together the work done by Rosenbaum and Gorter and CanChild’s F-words research group. This together with coaching frameworks, tools and techniques enabled Lucy and Arul to develop the F-Words Life Wheel. They have taught the “F-Words Life Wheel”, Knowledge Translation and Clinical Reasoning workshops for Paediatric Therapists in New Zealand. They have also been teaching Occupational Performance Coaching courses in NZ and internationally.
Join Lynda Mance and Lucy Lyon (Senior Allied Health Practitioner Occupational Therapist) on Wednesday October 28th at 11am – 1130am for an interactive session via Zoom, at the OTNZ-WNA e-Clinical workshops 2020.
“I am a community paediatric occupational therapist in the Waitemata Community Child Health team, of Pakeha descent, originally from South Africa. I am now a Kiwi, having lived in Aotearoa since 1995. I work in a multidisciplinary team within Waitemata DHB, with families and children aged 2 to 16 to provide equipment and housing modification solutions, and with children aged 2 to 5 who have developmental challenges. I have a strong interest in Telehealth and equitable health service delivery to Maori and ensuring our service engages effectively with Maori. I convene the eHealth /Telehealth SIG.”
